How Do Deal With My Religious Family With My Sex Life?

My family told me they will disown me if they find out my mom catches me with a random guy again to have casual sex again. My family is Catholic and is against casual sex and I go against it and have casual sex and it pisses off my family. They all have sex in marriages and relationships but I struggle with impulse sexual behavior and my mom is threatening to send me to a psych ward if she catches me again but I do not qualify to go there but lots of people have casual sex. What should I do with this situation with my religious family and their strict against casual sex beliefs? I don’t tell them about my lifestyle my mom sometimes catches me with a guy and it goes against the family religion and I won’t be allowed to go to family events anymore if this happens again. What should I do about this situation? I am not allowed to have casual sex at all because of my religion and I can’t keep it distrest either because my family or my parents may find out somewhere. My behavior is going against our family values but many people have casual sex in this world. Now what? I should just keep my casual sex life a secret from my family?

Hi, that sounds like a stressful spot to be in, especially with family events on the line.

One thing stood out to me. You said the risks go out the window in the moment. That’s the part I’d focus on, not because of your family’s rules, but because it’s your life and you should feel like you’re the one deciding.

That might be worth bringing up in therapy. If your current therapist isn’t a good fit, you can look for someone else who takes you seriously.

Also, please be careful with people you don’t know well. Tell a friend where you’re going, use protection, and get tested regularly.

With your family, you probably won’t agree on everything, and that’s okay. But having at least one person you can be honest with, whether that’s a relative or a friend, can make this feel a lot less heavy.

Keep us posted if you want to talk more. There’s also a therapist directory here if you want to look.

Dealing with a religious family when your personal values or sex life are different from theirs can be difficult. I think the first thing to remember is that you don’t have to share every detail of your private life just because your family asks.

You can respect their beliefs while still having your own boundaries. If the topic comes up, try to stay calm and explain that you understand their concerns, but some parts of your life are personal and you’d prefer to make those decisions yourself.

You also don’t need to convince them to agree with everything you do. Sometimes the healthiest approach is simply accepting that you have different views while asking each other to remain respectful. If conversations repeatedly turn into arguments, judgment, or pressure, it may help to limit how much you discuss the subject.
