Does separation help couples gain clarity, or does it just make things harder?

It gave us space to think more clearly, but emotionally it was brutal at first. I didn’t realize how much the distance would hurt, even though we needed it.

For us, the separation mostly confirmed what we already knew but weren’t ready to admit while we were still together.

I think it really depends on how it’s done. Separation with some structure, like a timeline and maybe a counselor in the mix, can give people the headspace to actually think clearly. Without that, it usually just turns into drift, and drift is hard to undo.
